Glam Slam: Closet Case

A change of the seasons is always a good time to get organized when it comes to your wardrobe and closet.

LA Closet Design

It can seem quite daunting to get started on a closet overhaul, but organization expert Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design keeps things from seeing overwhelming by breaking down a closet re-design in six steps.

  1. Purge your closet
  2. Take inventory
  3. Design based on your space and inventory
  4. Determine materials/finishes/accessories/furniture pieces
  5. Work up a lighting plan
  6. Install your new closet!

Lisa has worked with celeb clients including Fergie, Kris Jenner and Jillian Michaels, but it’s possible to create a luxury closet for less.

Here, Lisa shares some really useful tips to help you with the process.

— Take inventory of your items so you can properly design your space. Allocate 22-24″ depth for hanging items, and make sure you have a combination of short hanging, medium hanging and long hanging based on your inventory. Determine your reach height so you know where to put your top hanging rod, and determine what goes below and above it. Use the complete height of your closet, and add base/crown molding to complete a finished, custom look. Don’t be afraid to mix materials, and add free-standing furniture pieces with your built-ins—add your own personal touches to the space!

— To make your closet as efficient as possible, make sure you are using the height of your closet and you are taking full advantage of full depth drawers. Pull-out shelves are great for maximizing this depth. If you have wall space, consider panels for hanging jewelry and scarves or hooks for additional accessories. Pull-down hanging rods are also great for maximizing the height in your closet—by installing these rods to the ceiling, this allows you to utilize all the space that is reachable below the hanging.

— One of the key principles in my design is designing so that you see every item in the closet at first glance; therefore, having purses hang or sit vertically on shelves is important, as well as hanging scarves and costume necklaces.

— In my opinion, it is worth investing money into a closet design you are happy with—if the bones and layout of your closet aren’t functional, then you are then spending money to compensate for a poorly designed closet. In addition to the design, spend money on the functional hardware (eg full extension drawer glides) and custom drawer inserts. You can save money on the decorative hardware (knobs, hooks) as there are many on the market on a budget!

— I like custom drawer inserts, shelf dividers, pull-out valet hooks, and pull-out packing tables. Every little bit helps in the quest for organization and a well-designed closet!
