Glam Slam: ‘Fall’ Fashion

Today is the first day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. I haven’t been in a couple of years and I miss it because it’s fun and exciting… but at the same time, I don’t miss the crazy schedules, standing in long lines and waiting endlessly for a show to start, not to mention the freezing weather in New York.

The shows are our first look at the clothes from the Fall 2011 collections… but I’ve had a different kind of “fall” fashion on my radar. Every time the fashion shows roll around… well, it seems like the runways become littered with falling models.

The other day my co-worker Anthony sent me a photo of a model falling on a runway during Paris Fashion Week. Because he works in our photo department, he sees ALL the photos and often sends things my way that he thinks I would find interesting or funny. And I don’t know what it is, but those shots of falling models always gets a chuckle out of me. Or more accurately- a cackle.

I feel kind of guilty that this makes me laugh because I do feel sorry for the poor girls who fall – how embarrassing and humiliating.

But when designers send models out on a slippery runway in 6 or even 8-inch platforms (like at Vivienne Westwood or Alexander McQueen, for example), you almost EXPECT a model to fall. It’s practically guaranteed.

The shows are meant to be high drama and over-the-top… that’s how the designers and their collections get attention and publicity… so don’t expect the theatrics or sky-high heels to go away any time soon. I guess that’s just one of the hazards of the job.

Hmmm… I wonder how many models will become runway road kill this fashion week?
