Glam Slam: Go Green, Stay Chic

One of the most common concerns for gals that want to go green is how to stay chic while doing it! But Fashion and Beauty Expert Jamie Krell (featured on the Style Network) assures, “It’s never been easier to find cool, on-trend fashion or natural beauty products.”

Celebrities prove that style does not have to be sacrificed! “Take Kate Bosworth showing up to co-host the Gorgeous and Green benefit in San Francisco wearing a hemp, organic silk and recycled zipper dress from Phillip Lim. Or take Natalie Portman at this year’s Oscars wearing vegan shoes from Stella McCartney,” Jamie says. Natalie even launched her OWN line of vegan footwear in 2008 when she teamed up with NY label, Te Casan.

Combining fashion and functionality requires a little research. When it comes to clothes, what makes products green? Jamie explains, “Eco-friendly can have anything to do with the dyes that are used, to the washes and finishes used in the construction of the garments. Anything that reduces the amount of chemicals and waste will contribute to a cleaner way of producing the clothing.”

Of course, once the “why’s” are out of the way the question becomes “how.” Jamie introduces us to some amazing environmentally friendly clothes. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Alicia Silverstone love The Battalion, a line that focuses on knits and woven fabrics primarily made from bamboo, organic cotton blends and cruelty-free silk. Check them out at. www.thebattalion.us. Clothing of the American Mind (Hilary Swank and Ellen DeGeneres are fans) features %100 organic tees with messages like ‘stop war and yield for peace.’ Find them at www.whiteapricot.com.

Jamie also loves the Go Green Go by Phillip Lim collection, which features tanks, cropped pants and tunic dresses made from natural cotton and lined in organic silk – “all still bearing his signature relaxed silhouette.” Find the line at www.barneys.com.

Our looks are never totally polished without the right makeup and beauty products! “Be prepared to read labels. Look for products free of synthetics, chemicals, mineral oils, sulfates, artificial fragrances and dyes.” Instead focus on products “infused with natural, good-for-you ingredients like green tea which is a natural anti-ager and pomegranate which is a great anti-oxidant for the skin.”

While natural products are everywhere these days (from Sephora to the drugstore!), one of Jamie’s go to green stops is Vert, an eco-chic beauty lifestyle boutique in Venice, CA frequented by Julia Roberts and Molly Sims. They carry candles, perfume, vintage jewelry, skincare and makeup from around the world. But don’t worry if you can’t get to the store you can shop online at www.vertla.com.
