Glam Slam: Happy Birthday, Gorgeous!

Happy! Happy! Happy! Birthday to my beautiful, gorgeous, fun-loving daughter Harlow who turns the big three today. I have the same question parents everywhere ask…“Where did the time go?” I feel like she was just born!

I love how my little pint-sized fashionista makes me look at life…and style…through new eyes every day. She doesn’t care what color is “the new black.” Orange is her favorite color no matter what. She likes orange in the summer, spring, fall or winter. She doesn’t care if it looks good against her skin tone or asks herself, “What will I wear this with?”

Orange makes her happy and whatever color makes her happy, makes me happy. Orange isn’t all that easy to find though (outside of Halloween time) so when I saw a pair of orange neon pants at Crewcuts this week, I snapped them up. She will glow-in-the-dark, but that’s ok…they’re orange, dammit!

Since she doesn’t know fashion “rules” exist, she doesn’t know anything about “what matches” or have to worry about making a fashion faux pas. Anything is fair game. She will easily put a leopard jacket with a Missoni for Target zigzag sweater, jeggings and Converse sneaks. I love it!

She enjoys a fashion freedom most of us have long since lost. Dressing for your age or body type is something I hope she won’t have to think about for years. Seeing how she views and wears clothes is refreshing.

I’m sure when she’s a tween and a teenager, I will look back fondly on this age and stage and wish for the time when labels and designers didn’t matter and long before the inevitable battles over age-appropriate clothes or the threat of dying her hair blue or purple.

For now, it’s all about innocence and pure joy. I’m trying to savor every moment. But time, like all fashion trends, is flying so fast I can’t keep up.
