Glam Slam: Kim Kardashian’s Blonde Ambition

“It is blonde. I’ve never dyed my hair before in my life. I just want, I want a complete change.”

That’s Kim Kardashian talking about her new light locks, which she debuted at the Teen Choice Awards this week.

She’s the latest celeb to go blonde… Britney, Lindsay and Jessica Alba have all recently lightened up!

Rebecca Friedman, co-owner of the Hollywood’s Goodform Salon, tells us how she created Kim’s new golden hue and tips on what to ask your stylist if you want to transform your hair from dark to blonde.

“We wanted to pay homage to the gorgeous 1960s vixens Raquel Welch and Catherine Deneuve, who made smoky butter cream blondes so iconic. Kim’s hair is naturally very dark and had never been colored before going light. This was a plus for me, as virgin hair is much easier to lift. However, when making such a drastic color change, you always have to be realistic about how light you can go without jeopardizing the integrity of your hair. Your hair is the one accessory you wear every day, so keeping it healthy and glossy while achieving a desired color is key.

Achieving the perfect base color creates a canvas for the entire look. I lifted Kim’s base using a Redken color that helps to eliminate unwanted warm tones. Aim for a base color that is either a milky sparkling light brown or a dark beige desert blonde. Stay deeper in the roots. This imparts depth and a softer grow out.

The highlights serve as the pop for the entire color. The streaks should be more focused around the face creating a halo of light. To keep the highlights more defused, the color should fade lighter as it works its way down the hair shaft. Think that perfect color little kids get after a Summer at the beach. Finally pull the whole look together with a gloss.

This is a very involved color process. Any seasoned colorist will tell you never to try this at home. You will end up spending more money in the long run having a home dye job gone wrong, fixed by your colorist.

Kim’s complexion played a huge roll in how light we went and what tones would be flattering against her skin, she has a beautiful warm complexion with some olive undertones. We wanted to stay away from really ashy tones and anything lemon yellow, which can make you sallow. Study your eye color and the flecks of light in them, this is good way to know if you are cool or warm complected.

At the end of this transformation Kim looked stunning, her skin glowed and her eyes looked like shimmery topaz. With her new soft sun kissed color she truly is golden!”

And Kim loves the new look. “It’s a new me, it’s a new beginning. What’s crazy is I never wanna go dark again.”
