Glam Slam: Love Your Skin In 2010

Did you vow to baby your skin this year? You know that drinking more water and not smoking are two huge ways to improve the condition of your skin.

Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Bruce Katz, who has worked with Mariah Carey and other stars, shares more tips for better skin.

1. BAN THE TAN
Saying no to tanning beds and opting for a safe, self-tanner: Studies suggest that first use of tanning bed before age 35 increases the risk for melanoma by 75%. A natural skin tone shows that you are smart about sun protection, but if you feel like you need a glow invest in a self-tanner and ditch the tanning beds.

THE GOOD DOC’S PICK: I recommend choosing a self tanner like Bronze Glow Self Tanner by Roxanne Rizzo because it is easy to apply and gives a natural tan look without harmful UV rays. ($30 at www.roxannerizzo.com)

2. USE SUNSCREEN
Use a sunscreen every day instead of just lathering up before heading to the beach. It is important to apply a UVA/UVB protection of an SPF of 30 or higher on a daily basis – even if it is cloudy outdoors. This will help prevent UV sun damage to the skin, which could cause premature aging and increase chances of developing skin cancer.

THE GOOD DOC’S PICK: I recommend choosing a facial moisturizer that contains a high SPF like, Cetaphil’s UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50, a lightweight, non-greasy formula provides daily sun protection. ($13.99 at www.drugstore.com)

3. THE RIGHT SKINCARE
Finding a skincare regimen that works for your specific skin type. No skin type is the same, so it is important to consult your dermatologist and create a skincare regimen that is specific to your skin type and concerns. If a person does not choose the right type of product for their skin they can cause irritation and allergic reactions and they can even worsen their initial concerns.

THE GOOD DOC’S PICK: I recommend choosing a skincare line that has regimens for individual skin types, like PCA SKIN who has customized regimens for acne, hyperpigmentation, sensitive skin, aging skin, men’s skin, post-procedure care and lip care. ($14-$100 at www.skinstore.com)

4. SWITCH TO MINERAL MAKEUP
Mineral makeup does not block pores of the skin and is non-irritating which is extremely important for those suffering from acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and many other skin conditions. Traditionally mineral makeup is made from natural ingredients so it gives a more natural look and for some could improve the appearance of skin conditions.

THE GOOD DOC’S PICK: I recommend choosing jane iredale mineral makeup. jane iredale is 100% natural and is not just for color enhancing, but rather the overall health of the skin. (www.janeiredaledirect.com)

5. REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP
Always remove makeup before going to bed: this prevents the pores from getting blocked, so it is important that every night makeup is removed. Without doing this, skin can become irritated from left over makeup and breakouts can occur

THE GOOD DOC’S PICK: A simple baby shampoo such as Johnson & Johnson’s can be great to remove makeup especially for people with sensitive skin. ($4.49 at www.cvs.com)
