The Cannes Film Festival ended yesterday, wrapping up twelve days of non-stop red carpet glamour from the Haute Couture gowns to the stars’ gorgeous makeup.
“The major trends at Cannes this year were bright lips and bold, long lashes!” according to Joanna Schlip, Celebrity Makeup Artist for Physicians Formula, who has worked with Audrina Patridge, Denise Richards, Christina Applegate and Jillian Michaels.
Here, Joanna shares how you can achieve the same gorgeous looks as Cannes ladies Gwen Stefani and Rachel McAdams.
“Bold, bright lips were huge from baby doll pink to brick red. The trick with bold lipstick is to pick a color that you feel confident wearing. This is where the rules don’t apply – when you wear a bright lip you are making a statement. Take a cue from what you are wearing. Think of it as an accessory.
There are a few easy tricks to help lipstick stay put. Stain the lip first with anything from Kool-Aid or JELL-O to a lip stain. Line the lips with lip liner – you can even fill in the lips with the liner. Then put on your lipstick. Apply powder over your lips and then apply the lipstick again. It should not move. This is so important for celebrities who need their makeup to stay put during these long red carpet events.
Long, bold eyelashes are a red carpet staple. To open up eyes and make lashes pop, you must curl lashes. Then apply two coats of a thickening mascara or opt for false eyelashes. False eyelashes are easy to use and there’s no need to be afraid of them. For thicker lashes, I love the Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum. If you mess up with the false eyelashes, you can use a black eyeliner to camouflage it.
Luminous skin is always in. Use an illuminating foundation all over and then highlight the cheeks, brow bone and bridge of the nose with a slight shimmer. The Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Bronzer, Blush & Eye Shadow works well because you can use it everywhere.”
