Glam Slam: Nothing To Wear

A closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. How many times have you said that to yourself? Well, that is how I am feeling this week. I am going to the Golden Globes on Sunday and I have nothing to wear. And I mean it. I am three weeks away from giving birth, so none of the fancy schmancy outfits I own fit.

I REALLY have nothing to wear.

Nada.
Zip.
Zilch.

I keep thinking of Angelina Jolie, flawless on the red carpet in Cannes. Her hair and makeup perfect. Her beautiful green Max Azria gown. How can anyone compete with that?

Reality check time! The thing us regular gals (pregnant or not) have to remember is that she had a stylist and glamour squad. She didn’t have to worry about the weather or high heels hurting her feet because she was chauffeured to the event and then only had to spend a few minutes walking the red carpet and posing for photographers before going inside the theater.

For people WORKING a red carpet event like the Globes, it’s a whole other world. Think of the difference between Cinderella at the ball and then after midnight when the spell wears off – you get the idea.

The worker bees are in place on the red carpet by 2pm and are standing there until arrivals end at 5pm. There is really nowhere to sit while you wait, so there goes any thought of wearing fabulous heels.

It often gets chilly as the sun starts to set, so you need a (usually less than glamorous) cover-up to keep you warm. You also have your Blackberry to read and send emails, your notes, pens and paper. So no cute little clutch.

Oh, and then there is the matter of what to wear. I’m sure Angelina had the luxury of borrowing her gown or maybe it was designed especially for her and given to her. Me, not so much. And who wants to go spend a ton of money for a maternity dress that I will literally wear once.

So, the bottom line is, whether it’s a high school reunion, a wedding or a prom – we aren’t being fair to ourselves when we try to compare our looks and wardrobes to the stars we see on TV, in magazines or online. That unrealistic perfection is just not attainable for 99.9% of us. Every now and then I have to remind myself not to lose sight of that.

So, I’m just going to go and enjoy seeing the stars and what THEY are wearing. And be thankful that I don’t have the pressures that come with fabulous clothes and fame – like suffering in a too tight dress, just so I will look skinny in all the photos and footage.

While I myself may be unglamorous in my non-designer clothes and practical flat shoes, I tell you this – at least I will be comfortable!
