Glam Slam: Play Up Your Shape!

Fall is just around the corner and it’s fun to see the stores filling up with fresh merchandise.

A new season is always a good time to think about what works… and what doesn’t work for you, as opposed to what is trendy.

“Dressing for your shape is one of the most important rules in fashion,” says Kate Dimmock, fashion director of People StyleWatch. “You want to make sure you play up curves if you have them, or create curves if you need them. The key is knowing which body type you have, then applying a few simple rules to help you look your best this fall.”

Here, Kate shares tips to help you dress for your shape:

CURVY:
If you are curvy, look for pieces that show off your natural hourglass, like a belted sheath dress or a fitted blazer. Try well-constructed pieces that nip in at your middle.

HIPPY:
If you are hippy, you want to downplay your lower body while adding interest above your waist. Try emphasizing your middle, bust or shoulders by wearing bright colors, prints or details on top (like Alicia Keys). Avoid tight fitting silhouette dresses.

PLUS:
Don’t be afraid to show off your figure! And don’t be afraid of using bright colors. By choosing smart details — like a belt to create a waist or embellishments that draw the eye downward — you can really help define your shape, and feel confident. (Just check out Melissa McCarthy for proof!)

BUSTY:
If you are top heavy, try adding volume to your lower half with a textured skirt or neutral or light colored trousers. This will help bring your top half into proportion. Avoid light color, tight fits, and low cut tops.
