Glam Slam: Princess Diana’s Dresses!

Going… going…

Ten of Princess Diana’s most famous and iconic dresses hit the auction block today and are expected to bring in the big bucks. For royal watchers and fashion fans alike, these are amazing gowns… a part of history. Prince William persuaded Princess Diana to donate 79 of her couture pieces to raise money for charity back in 1997; three months before she died in a car crash in Paris. All of the evening gowns are by British designers and are expected to go for between $35,000 and $350,000 each at the London auction house, ‘Kerry Taylor’.

The most famous dress, and my personal favorite, is the midnight blue silk velvet gown by ‘Victor Edelstein’; that Diana wore when she danced with John Travolta at the White House in 1985. Seeing her look so happy and carefree on the dance floor with one of the most amazing movie stars is an image we won’t soon forget. This is the gown I would bid on, if I had the money. But since the dress could fetch as much as $108,000; it’s just a wee bit out of my range!

Another stunner is the burgundy ‘Catherine Walker’ crushed velvet evening gown Diana wore to the premiere of “Back to the Future”, also in 1985. She accessorized the low V-back gown with a long strand of pearls knotted at the back. She later complained that although the necklace looked very chic, the knot dug into her back during the film!

There’s also a pretty white chiffon cocktail number by ‘Zandra Rhodes’ that Diana wore to a benefit event in London in 1987. The pleated bodice is studded with pearl beads and sequins; the waistband features quilted, top-stitched white satin over the draped skirt edged with pink crystals and white pearlised beads.

The collection of gowns is expected to rake in $1.2 million.
