Glam Slam: Short & Sweet

Ready to take it all off?

Warm weather is here and if you want to go short for Summer with a cute bob like Gwyneth Paltrow or Anne Hathaway, you can do it affordably. Pam Kelly, the National Director of Technical Services for Fantastic Sams Hair Salons (where Mischa Barton, Tori Spelling and the Olsen twins have been spotted!) reveals tips for going short.

“Short cuts depend a lot on your face shape and hair type,” says Pam. To avoid a hair disaster, she suggests you always bring in a picture of what you’re looking for if you decide to go with a drastic cut.

FINE, THIN HAIR

Never go exceedingly short and consider getting a temporary wave or texture wave, which is the new term for a perm and adds texture and volume to limp hair, perfect for air drying in the Summer months.

THICK HAIR

Any kind of short cut will work, but be sure to use a lot of silicone-based styling product to keep frizz down when it’s hot out. Rounded bobs with textured ends flipped out are popular cuts right now for those with thicker hair.

NARROW FACE

You can go shorter. A diagonal forward bob, sort of like a backwards mullet where the ends are longer in front and short in the back, works well for this face shape, as does the classic bob. The Rihanna “envelope” cut, in which the length is on top, works well too.

ROUND FACE

Narrow out the face by moving the hair forward toward face, sides down longer past jaw line so hair is in front of you. No pageboy or short cuts that will just accentuate face’s roundness!

HOW TO STYLE SHORT HAIR

Aside from silicone products and thermal guard blowout creams, heat appliances such as flat irons and blow dryers are crucial for a smooth, put together look.

If drying hair naturally, use either a smoothing cream or a curl defining cream; once hair is 80% dry style it out with fingers. The best part of short hair is the ability to “finger style”, then work in some shaping spray for texture.

For a great Summer do‘, take a one inch section of hair at the front and twirl it back and secure with a bobby pin – hair is out of your face and it’s an easy, feminine look.
