Glam Slam: Skin Saving Solutions

The holiday season is just around the corner, and that means we’ll all be traveling more… eating more… and celebrating more, which can take a real toll on our skin. Skin Expert Jan Marini, who has worked with Paris Hilton, Naomi Campbell and Cher, gives her tips for taking care of your skin during the holidays.

HYDRATE

Celebrities like Madonna always look fresh when leaving the airport and the secret is hydration. Dry air on airplanes can really absorb all of the moisture from your skin. So before you board, I recommend coating your skin with a rich moisturizer and bringing along a good hand cream like Neutrogena’s Norwegian Formula. It feels super light and doesn’t leave your hands with a greasy feeling. Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water and stay away from dehydrating airplane drinks such as coffee and soda. www.neutrogena.com

PROTECT

It may be Winter, but the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays don’t take the holidays off. You still need to protect your skin from premature aging, sun spots and skin damage. Look for a full spectrum sunscreen with antioxidants such as the Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant SPF 30 by Jan Marini. The unique quality about this particular SPF is that it acts like a sponge to absorb excess oil your skin may create so that your skin maintains a smooth, matte finish throughout the day. Plus, it doesn’t smell like traditional sunscreen and its silky texture works as an excellent makeup base. www.janmarini.com

EAT SMART

Taste… but don’t eat everything! This way you can satisfy your appetite and fill up on nutritious holiday foods like cranberries that have a positive impact on your skin. However, don’t be fooled by cranberry sauce that comes in a can. Fresh cranberries are full of flavonoids that are high in antioxidants, which are not only amazing for your complexion but also help to prevent everything from infections to strokes to cancer.

LIMIT ALCOHOL

Have some wine, but not too much! Resveratrol is an anti-aging extract found in wine, but did you know that you would have to drink 1,000 bottles a day to reap noticeable benefits? Spare yourself the hangover and use skincare products that already contain concentrated quantities of Resveratrol. Our Age Intervention Regeneration Facial Mask contains potent amounts of this ingredient leaving an instantaneously luminous and resurfaced complexion that is perfect for a last minute pick-me-up.

LIP SERVICE

One of the most common complaints relating to harsh Winter weather is unwanted dry chapped lips. Not only are dry lips uncomfortable, but they can also interfere with lipstick application and romantic encounters. Here are my tips for saving your lips this season.

1. Use a wet (wrung out) washcloth to vigorously “buff” the lip area. This provides just the right amount of exfoliation and removes dead dry skin, leaving behind a smooth surface.

2. Rub everything you use on your face all over your lips – and be generous. This means moisturizers, Retin-A, AHA’s, etc.

3. Finish with a sealant. Use something that is thick and emollient. This idea is to leave behind a barrier that sits on your lips throughout the night and prevents moisture from escaping. Some great examples are plain old Vaseline or Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour cream. www.elizabetharden.com

4. In the morning, make certain you again massage your facial products onto your lips and you won’t believe how silky, plump and smooth they will look. Say goodbye to those undesirable dry, chapped lips!
