Glam Slam: Summer Skincare Guide

Summer is almost here and we’ll all be spending more time outdoors! Yay! But it also means being extra careful when it comes to sun exposure. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Dermatologist Lawrence Moy, MD, shares preventative tips to keep your skin healthy.

1. Sun active people should have yearly checkups.
2. Check your body monthly for dark spots.
3. Check your body monthly for any new spots (have a friend or family member check those spots that are hard for you to see).
4. Look for spots that look irregular in color or shape (many of the bad spots are flat).
5. Look in areas that are not sun exposed as well as sun exposed areas.
6. No tanning booths, absolutely not!
7. Do not get sunburned and try not to tan!
8. While dark/ethnic skin may not sunburn as easily, they’re still at risk of damage. Particularly vulnerable areas include the palms of the hands and soles of the feet (where skin is lightest). Use sun protection for all skin tones as the sun can also affect ethnic/dark skin (reggae legend Bob Marley fell victim and eventually lost his life to melanoma).
9. Use a dermatologist recommended sunscreen and continue to reapply throughout the day! Suggested sunscreens include:

Best Drugstore Buy
Stick with well-known companies like Neutrogena or NIVEA. Surprising to many people, the major companies like these take more time and research to do the products right.

Best For Kids
Kids need safe, hypoallergenic products. Neutrogena and other name brands (NIVEA, Eucerin, AVEENO and Dove) are good products that work well for kids to cleanse, moisturize and not cause problems.

Best For Athletes
Body Glove is made for the outdoor athlete. Volleyball players like it because it works all day and does not cause the sand to stick to the skin. It combines the active testing and performance that a surf and water sport company would want coupled with the testing and proof that a dermatologist wants in one single product. The other sunscreens that work effectively are BullFrog and Blue Lizard. Both of these will stay on the skin longer and thus don’t need to be reapplied.

FOR EXTRA SUN PROTECTION:
Don’t forget to wear a hat! Swimwear designer Brette Sandler has teamed up with Hat Attack to create a special UV protective sun hat to raise awareness and educate more women to be responsible in the sun. (Kim Kardashian and Lea Michele both have the hat.) The Hat Attack for Brette Sandler sun hat retails for $95 exclusively at www.brettesandler.com with 25 percent of proceeds benefiting The Skin Cancer Foundation.
