Glam Slam: Test Driving Designer Collaborations

After I wrote about the DVF for Gap Kids line and The Marni for H & M collection last week, someone pointed out to me that I was having “quite the designer collaboration week.”

So true. It seems like it’s been one designer collaboration after another the past couple of months…fashion heaven for me! Here’s how the collections have been stacking up—in my humble opinion.

MARNI FOR H & M
I’ve loved the high-end Marni line for years, so obviously I am a big fan and was most excited for this one. As I’ve mentioned, (and as you can see from the photo) I bought quite a few pieces and have already worn a couple of them. The patent leather jacket with knit sleeves is well made (and should be, since at $199, it’s the most expensive piece in the collection). I wore the big and bold green and orange cuff the other day and got stopped more than once with people asking me who it was by. I also got comments on the sleeveless print shirt I was wearing. One security guard in a building made a point to ask me where I got it…because, he told me, it looks like the tribal prints that are popular where he is from in Kenya. He loved it! So do I!

DVF FOR GAP KIDS AND GAP BABY
I like the colorful prints and how the line is made with fabrics that are easy to wash. It will be interesting to see if it’s easy to get in and out of the “wrap dresses,” which are actually more like little rompers. This line has the style seal of approval from my very opinionated daughter. I bought her an adorable short sleeve shirt with a bumble bee on it. She’s been asking to wear it every day, but it’s been too cold. She even brings it to school “in case” it warms up. Finally, my husband put a long sleeve tee under it, so she could wear it now and she said all the kids in her class liked it.

DOO.RI FOR MACY’S
This collection was a little more under the radar and less hyped than the others. I wasn’t even sure exactly when it was in stores…I had to call the local Macy’s and ask them. I guess that’s because Doo.Ri isn’t quite the household name Diane von Furstenberg is. When I got to the store, there was no frenzy, no craziness. No one else was even looking at the collection, which was prominently displayed. I had it all to myself. It’s not a huge collection, but there were a few pieces I liked. I had seen a faux leather jacket in some of the ads…which I liked better in print than in person. I bought a black jersey T-shirt dress and a black and white abstract print dress, which I had seen in many of the ads. It’s cute and well made, but it doesn’t come with the same belt that’s shown in the ads. Instead, it has a belt that’s engraved with “Doo.Ri” on the buckle, which I find cheesy and do not like at all. So I had to go and buy a belt to go with it. But overall, I liked the designs and the quality and would like to see more collections in the future.

JASON WU FOR TARGET
After Target’s Missoni madness, I didn’t really plan to shop for this line. I just so happened to be in Target the morning it came out though and the rush was on, although it was nothing like the Missoni or even Marni mania I witnessed. I ended up buying one shirt from this collection…a feminine sky blue polyester shirt. I also liked a black cocktail dress, but they didn’t have any small sizes left. I thought there were some cute, flirty pieces in the collection, but I was disappointed that a couple of the items I had seen and liked in magazines, were much more sheer and see-through in person and I wouldn’t wear them for that reason.
