Glam Slam: The Princess Bride-To-Be

“We’re hugely excited and… we’re looking forward to spending the rest of the time, the rest of our lives together and seeing what the future holds,” Prince William said yesterday as he and his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton made it official, finally announcing their much speculated about engagement!

The happy couple faced the cameras together at St. James’s Palace in London yesterday and already Kate is looking the part of a Princess-to-be. She wore a flattering blue wrap style dress with simple jewelry and heels. Her hair was blown out and her hands perfectly manicured to show off the spectacular sapphire and diamond engagement ring that once belonged to Princess Diana.

“It’s a family ring, yes,” William said. “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so I thought it was quite nice. Obviously she’s not going to be around to share in the fun and excitement of it all this is my way of keeping her close to it all.”

That was such a touching way to honor Diana and I couldn’t help but think about how she will not be there on her oldest son’s big day. I think she would have loved Kate, who seems like the perfect choice. She is beautiful, stylish, poised, classy, unpretentious and confident and she already seems secure in front of the cameras as she and William laughed and joked with reporters. The world will be watching her every move for the rest of her life. That’s a lot of pressure, but she seems like she can handle the spotlight with grace.

The wedding is months away, but the frenzy has kicked into high gear. There is already commemorative royal wedding china for the couple! The press is going crazy with reports of exactly when the wedding will be held and where it will be held. Will Kate’s family be involved in the planning? Will the bride have any say as far as planning her wedding? Probably not. She will, however, most likely get to select her bridesmaids.

The BBC is predicting that the wedding could have the biggest TV audience in history. Almost a billion people watched Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding back in 1981 and they are expecting this wedding to vastly surpass those numbers. The wedding will also have a sizable impact on the British economy, tourism and fashion.

Oh yes, fashion. Kate is already quite the style maven in Britain, having already made several best dressed lists including Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed. And the big question for fashion watchers is who will she wear? One of Kate’s favorite designers is the Brazilian designer Daniella Issa Helayel, who also counts Madonna, Scarlett Johansson and Naomi Campbell as fans. Kate will most likely be expected to pick a British designer though and several names have already been bandied about including Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and Victoria Beckham.

No matter whom she chooses, Kate will make a beautiful bride. Well done, William. Well done. Your mum would have been so proud.
