Glam Slam: Women Of The Year

Glamour celebrated the 2008 Women of the Year last night, with the magazine’s annual awards to honor extraordinary women.

But I vote to change it from “Women of the Year” to “The Year of the Woman.” What a year it’s been! 2008 saw both a female Vice Presidential candidate and Senator Hillary Clinton’s bid to run as the first major party female Presidential candidate. The Senator, in Isaac Mizrahi, was one of the women honored at the event.

“I think it’s a good message to send that obviously women are doing so many extraordinary things, here in our country and around the world and we need to recognize that and support each other and try to make progress to make life better for the next generation,” the Senator told us.

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, who looked gorgeous in a long white L’Wren Scott gown, was honored for her work as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM, an organization which raises awareness for women’s rights. The new mom came with husband Keith Urban and admitted she doesn’t get all dressed up and go out as much these days.

“It’s not something I would normally do, but because its about shining the light on women’s issues, I’m here, I put on my dress,” she laughed.

Tyra Banks was honored for her work with TZONE, the foundation she created, which encourages and supports young women.

“Yes, I’ve done a lot, I’ve accomplished a lot, but then you put me next to the other women and you go…” she says as she makes a face and smiles to finish the thought.

Other fierce females hitting the Glamour red carpet… Debra Messing in Ralph Lauren, who told us it’s her “favorite event of the year,” Fergie in Michael Kors and Natalie Portman, who did a nice job of summing up the night.

“Its kind of nice to be part of something that’s honoring women who are accomplishing things in a way that I’d want my kids to aspire to.”
