Glam Slam: You Are What You Eat!

You’ve heard that saying forever, but it’s true! And if you want gorgeous skin like Natalie Portman or Freida Pinto, you’d better eat well!

“What we eat directly affects our skin,” says Celebrity Esthetician Scott-Vincent Borba, who has worked with Paula Abdul, AnnaLynne McCord, Ashley Greene and Mila Kunis.

Scott-Vincent’s top pantry picks and essentials always include healthful oils (canola and olive), green tea (for a high level of polyphenol antioxidants) and spices like cumin, that fortifies the renewal of fresh, healthy cells and imparts a healthy skin glow, and cayenne pepper to increase circulation and detoxify.

Here are some of his favorite “skin healthy recipes…”

UN-FRIED CHICKEN
Why it’s good: This dish contains flaxseed (which is high in omega-3 fatty acids which helps skin), wheat germ (which is high in vitamin E to help skin’s glow), and substitutes bleached flour for tempura, egg yolk for Egg Beaters, and traditional deep-frying for baking (to cut down on trans fats which can lead to clogged pores).

How To: Dip a boneless/skinless chicken breast with a mixture of 3 tbsp Egg Beaters and 3 tbsp soy milk, then roll in a coating made of 2 oz tempura flake, 1 tbsp flaxseed powder, 1 tbsp wheat germ, and 1 tsp of Mrs. Dash. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes, or until center of chicken is fully cooked.

COMPLEXION ENHANCING CHOCOLATE MILK
Why it’s good: Your body needs antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E to encourage overall health (overall health leads to glowing, healthy skin). Vitamin D and E are known to encourage skin health and help the appearance of oily skin.

How To: Heat 1 oz of 72% cocoa dark chocolate (rich in antioxidants) in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave for about 8 seconds. Pour the heated cocoa into 7 oz of 2% milk (rich in protein, and vitamins A and D and calcium), then add 1 oz of vanilla almond milk (rich in vitamin E). Stir until the cocoa spreads out evenly through the beverage and enjoy. This drink is a great way to catch some skin assisting vitamins and is a lean treat when you’re craving chocolate.

SKIN-FUL NACHOS
Why it’s good: Moderate amounts of selenium provide antioxidant vitamins, and antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E encourage overall health (overall health leads to healthy looking skin). Fatty acids help skin’s glow, and encourage an overall younger appearance.

How To: Cut 6 wheat tortillas (selenium) into eighths and place them on a baking sheet. Drizzle them with a tbsp of canola oil (rich in fatty acids) and bake for 10 mins at 350 degrees. When the chips start to get crisp, sprinkle on 1/2 cup shredded low-fat cheddar cheese (rich in vitamins A, D, and calcium), and 6 diced black olives (rich in monosaturated fat, and vitamin E), and remove from oven when cheese has melted. For the topping mix 1/2 tbsp flaxseed powder with 1 tbsp fat-free sour cream (vitamins A and D) and serve.

HIGH ENERGY SALMON STEAK
Why it’s good: Antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E encourage overall health (overall health leads to healthy looking skin). Fatty acids help skin’s glow, and encourage an overall younger appearance. Vitamin B has widely been used to encourage healthy skin and fight acne. Lemon is high in collagen – the protein that makes skin firm. Peppercorns stimulate skin pigmentation.

How To: With a 6 oz salmon steak (high in protein, fatty acids and vitamins B and E), coat one side with 4 crushed peppercorns (which stimulate skin pigmentation), 1 oz EVOO (vitamin E), and the juice of 1/2 a lemon (vitamin C). Bake for 20 mins at 300 degrees and let it sit for a few minutes while you prepare the sauce. For the sauce: blend 2 baby carrots, the juice of 1/2 a lemon, the liquid from a vitamin E capsule, and a whole 1,000 mg vitamin B pill (don’t worry, the bitter taste will be a compliment to the fiery black pepper and tangy lemon juice). Pour over the salmon steak and garnish with a sprig of parsley and the zest of the lemon. This lean meal is sure to give you and your skin a quick pick-me-up.
