Golden Globe Snubs & Surprises! Angelina Jolie & Johnny Depp Get Nods For ‘The Tourist’

The 2011 Golden Globe nominations have been announced with quite a few surprises and, as always, some serious snubs.

In the film category, the biggest surprise might be the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) love for the critically panned (and little seen) “The Tourist,” which earned nominations for both of its stars, Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. The actor also earned a nod in the same category for his role as The Mad Hatter in “Alice In Wonderland.” “The Tourist” was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. Some are questioning if the HFPA is hoping to amp up the star power for the big night with appearances at the ceremony by these two actors. The film was critically-panned.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway’s duel nominations for “Love and Other Drugs,” also came as surprise. Will the duo’s Golden Globe heat continue through the award season and lead to Oscar nominations for the onscreen pair?

“Spider-Man’s” new leading lady, Emma Stone, woke up to good news on Tuesday with a well deserved, but surprising, nomination for “Easy A” in the Best Actress – Comedy or Musical category.

Other surprises in the movie categories included, a nod for the Bruce Willis/Helen Mirren starrer “Red,” which was neither critically acclaimed nor a major hit, Kevin Spacey in “Casino Jack” and “Burlesque,” which was not well received by critics, but was a crowd-pleaser to many. The Christina Aguilera and Cher musical also scored two song nominations for “Bound To You” and “You Haven’t Seen The Last Of Me.” To its credit, it was the only true “musical” released in the past year, and it was certainly not the bomb of “Showgirls” proportions, which many were worried it might have been.

As for movie snubs, the cast of “Inception,” including Leonardo DiCaprio was entirely left out in the cold on Tuesday (although the film got four total nominations), as was the cast of the Coen brothers’ “True Grit.” With the exception of an acting nod for Jeremy Renner, the Ben Affleck-directed “The Town,” was also snubbed.

Hollywood was also buzzing about Justin Timberlake’s possible nomination for his role in “The Social Network,” but the singer-turned-actor failed to get the early morning call (his deserving co-star, Andrew Garfield, the future Spider-Man, was nominated in the Supporting Actor, Drama film category). Will Justin be ignored for the rest of the awards show season?

James Franco might have scored a nod for “127 Hours,” but director Danny Boyle was also ignored by the HFPA.

Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger, who appeared on Access Hollywood Live on Tuesday, said his #1 snub was “True Grit. “It’ll likely be the only Best Picture Oscar nominee that got zero Globe nominations,” he explained. As for Tuesday’s biggest surprise, he gave that to Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp’s latest big screen venture. “Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress for ‘The Tourist.’ Easily the first Best Picture nominee with a 20 score on Rotten Tomatoes,” he added.

Access’ Scott “Movie” Mantz was in agreement with Dave, saying, “Obviously, ‘True Grit’ was the biggest snub, by far. The fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press failed to recognize the movie underscores what little credibility they actually have.” Adding, “‘The Town’ was another great film that was M.I.A. Despite Jeremy Renner’s nom for Supporting Actor, Ben Affleck reinvented his career as a director, and he should have gotten noticed for it.”

Scott also had strong thoughts on the Globe surprises, telling AccessHollywood.com, “‘The Tourist?’ Three nominations? REALLY? Sorry, I have no words. But I can see why ‘Burlesque’ was nominated for Best Picture – Comedy or Musical – a) It’s a musical, and b) It’s a comedy — a comedy of errors!”

The Globes also dished out its fair share of small screen surprises and snubs too.

AMC continued its strong awards show presence of recent years with their new zombie series, “The Walking Dead,” which earned a surprise nomination for Best Television Series – Drama. HBO’s newcomer “Boardwalk Empire” is also considered a Globe surprise with three nominations.

Other TV nomination surprises included acting nods for Scott Caan in “Hawaii Five-O,” Julia Stiles’ short guest starring gig on “Dexter” (albeit, John Lithgow won for a similar role last year) and Piper Perabo for USA’s new series “Covert Affairs.”

Tuesday’s Globe nominations also served up quite a few TV snubs. Steve Carell scored a nomination for NBC’s “The Office,” but neither the show nor any of its other actors were recognized. Other NBC favorites “Parks and Recreation,” “Community” and critic-darling “Friday Night Lights” were also shut out.

“Mad Men’s” Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss were nominated, but January Jones – who has been nominated for the past two years – failed to get any Globe love this morning. Could the show’s new Betty Draper new storyline (divorced from Don and in another miserable marriage) be responsible?

“Breaking Bad’s” Aaron Paul won this year’s Emmy Award in the supporting actor category, but the actor was passed over completely by the Globes on Tuesday. His co-star Bryan Cranston was, however, nominated.

Vanessa Williams’ new role on “Desperate Housewives,” which many feel breathed new life into the long-running ABC series, was also ignored by the HFPA.

The shut outs continued for HBO’s always-phenomenal “True Blood,” “Grey’s Anatomy” (which many say is in the midst of a renaissance), and fan favorite “Lost,” which was completely passed over for its final season.

Will Angelina Jolie show up with Brad Pitt on her arm? Does Johnny Depp’s double nominations hurt his chances of walking away with a Globe? And, will “Mad Men” continue its award show dominance for yet another year? All will be decided live on NBC on January 16, 2011, when the Golden Globes take place with host Ricky Gervais.
