The stars aren’t out, but Jeremy Piven must be celebrating somewhere. The actor picked up the first Golden Globe announced Sunday night in the television category for Best Supporting actor.
Glenn Close was another winner in the television category.
Close won for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama for “Damages.” She beat out stiff competition from Minnie Driver, Edie Falco and Patricia Arquette.
British actress Samantha Morton won Best Supporting Actress, Series Mini-series or Movie, for her role in “Longford.” She trumped competition from “Grey’s Anatomy” star Katherine Heigl and “My Name Is Earl’s” Jaime Pressly.
Jon Hamm from AMC’s “Mad Men” won for Best Actor, Drama. His win was a notable one as he faced competition for the award from “Dexter’s” Michael C. Hall and “House’s” Hugh Laurie.
Queen Latifah picked up Best Actress, Mini-series or Motion Picture for TV, for her role in “Life Support.”
“I am so thrilled,” Latifah said in a statment to Access. “Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I wish I could be with you tonight to celebrate… ‘Life Support’ is such an important film which addresses such important issues and I’m so proud to be recognized for my work in it. I only hope that the film helps in our fight against AIDS and HIV.”
Last year America Ferrera won Best Actress for a TV Series Musical or Comedy, but this time around it was “30 Rock” star, Tina Fey’s turn. Fey snagged the award despite competition from “Pushing Daisies” star Anna Friel and Christina Applegate from “Samantha Who?”
David Duchovny of Showtime’s “Californication,” won for Best Actor TV Series Music or Comedy.
Best Actor in a Mini-series or Motion picture was awarded to Jim Broadbent for “Longford.”
“Longford” also won for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.
“Extras” may have wrapped up its run on HBO, but it will be remembered with a Globe for Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy. The funny show, which has featured guest appearances by Orlando Bloom and George Michael, beat out “30 Rock” and “Entourage.”
“Mad Men” won for Best TV Series, drama.
