This week, Sandra asks: “Is bread very high in calories? I am addicted to it!”

Keri’s Answer:

Thank you for your question! We’re in the post-Atkins era when everyone is still wondering what the deal is with bread — you’re not alone!

First of all, it’s possible to over consume calories of anything! Bread is a food that is easy to overeat because it tastes so good and because it generally does not fill us up (unless it is a very high fiber bread and then it still doesn’t always do the trick on its own). A typical slice of bread contains about 70 calories. Not too bad if you stick to just one slice but…

We tend to overeat bread. In particular, we overeat white bread because it has no fiber and the carbohydrates, about 14 grams per slice, gets converted into sugar in your body – fast! This can cause you to crave more (this is why you feel “addicted”). This can create a vicious cycle making you reach for that bread basket over and over and over again!

So, what about whole wheat bread? If you must indulge, go for 100% whole grain with at least 2 to 4 grams of fiber per slice. Also, you must pay attention to portion control. While one slice of bread with a salad and grilled piece of fish may have a place in your diet, a slice of bread with a bowl of pasta is just unnecessary. One more thing to remember, when buying packaged bread, always read the nutrition facts label as well as the ingredient list because many breads have multiple forms of added sugar.
