Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday — Andy Roddick Looks Like A Model, Thinks Like An Athlete

With all eyes on the US Open, Healthy Hollywood continues its tribute to the hottest tennis players on the planet with the dish on Andy Roddick.

The 28-year old top-ranked American whips up a female fan frenzy, not only with his ferocious serve, but also his ab-tastic shape and model good looks. It’s no wonder he’s the new face for Lacoste’s Challenge fragrance.

Yet, he’s endearingly modest when I asked him recently about his sex symbol status, revealing, “Right now I feel a little awkward.” Besides, he thinks Rafael Nadal is courting all the ladies’ attention, adding, “Rafa in Europe is like watching the Beatles roll around, he carries himself well too, it hasn’t gone to his head, he’s still very humble so you know he’s definitely the star over there right now.”

Yet, Roddick hopes to be the star at this years’ Open. He’s the last American to win the tournament back in 2003. The tennis ace shared with Healthy Hollywood his tips for getting ready for the US Open (or any big match).

1. Be In Optimal Shape:
“If you’re 3 days before the US Open and you’re not physically fit that is a problem, so you do your work months in advance…I like practicing at the stadium the week before just to get used to the surroundings and everything.”

2. Cut Back On Intense Practice Before Opening Day:
A few days before tournament starts “you normally taper it off, probably cut it in half…Basically it’s just making sure your body is right and you know getting rid of any little injuries you might have.”

3. Fine Tune Your Body:
“I set aside an hour and half a night for massage and stretching in the morning when you get up. Stretching before you hit, hydrating, eating right, you know all those things are just as important as your actual tennis practice.”

4. Eat Right:
“I normally do my carbs in the morning…No fried foods. No soda. I think everyone has a general idea of what is right or wrong to eat. I think what is sometimes lacking is the discipline to actually do it.”

5. Have A Pre-Game Ritual:
“I think it’s important for everyone, whether it’s listening to music, everyone needs a ritual. I normally stretch at the same time, eat at the same time, I normally don’t talk a lot before I go on, but I listen to music…I’m not superstitious. I don’t feel like my head is going to explode if I don’t eat at the right time or anything like that. It’s more just a matter of something to focus on and get you through the day so your mind isn’t wandering too much.”
