Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Cooler Weather Skin Rx!

The fall weather brings on cooler temperatures and brisk winds and if you’re like me it does a number on your complexion. My skin is definitely in need of a tune-up. Now, I realize, as a woman over-the-35 mark, my skin is never going to be naturally dewy and flawless – like Mila Kunis or Rihanna. But c’mon – recently I have suffered major breakouts and noticed my fine lines – not being so fine lately – and I’m not the only woman I know suffering from some sort of skin malady. The problem? According to skin experts, the change of seasons often causes people’s complexions to start acting up – but there is a solution.

Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! The h-word is the mantra to maintaining fabulous skin in the cooler weather. “The extreme environments of winter (extreme cold outside, indoor heat, and hot showers) can cause dehydration in the skin, which creates dry, dull looking skin,” notes skin expert Cat Tatman at gloProfessional. “Skin can become itchy and flaky as well. Helping prevent trans-epidermal water loss, protecting skin and keeping skin properly moisturized and free of dull skin will help maintain a healthier looking complexion,” adds Tatman.

Tatman suggests using a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, such as glo’s Advanced B5 Hydration. “Hyaluronic acid attracts and maintains 1,000 times its weight in water while preventing trans-epidermal water loss and protecting against environmental aggressors,” states Tatman.

Also, it’s a good idea to switch from a gel cleanser to a cream cleanser to provide an extra dose of hydration. “Incorporating a hydrating mask into your weekly regimen can soothe skin and prevent itchiness and flaking. A light exfoliation with a brush or a mild scrub once a week will also help maintain a healthy complexion,” suggests Tatman.

Go ahead and face fall and the colder temperatures with confidence and better skin!
