Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Katy Perry’s Secret To Sensational Skin!

Summer is just around the corner – time to start thinking hot weather, beaches, parties – and of course baring more skin!

May is skin cancer awareness month, so, what better time than NOW to brush up on skincare 101. After all, who doesn’t want to put their best face (and bod) forward this summer?

Teens & 20s:

At this stage, young adults should be thinking prevention! If you want to keep wrinkles, acne scars, and sun damage to a minimum in the future, then you need to take care of your skin now. “To be effective, a skin care regimen need not be complicated nor take more than a few minutes per day. Sticking with a good program on a consistent basis yields tremendous rewards both in terms of one’s appearance and self esteem,” say Dr. Katie Rodan, co-developer of Proactiv skincare.

Katy Perry, 26, maintains her dewy complexion with Proactiv’s Green Tea Moisturizer. The singer also admits she struggled with acne in the past, revealing, “I started getting acne really bad when I started touring. I was under so much stress and not getting as much sleep while on the road. Suddenly, all that stress started showing up on my face as blemishes. It made me feel very embarrassed and really self-conscious.”

She’s not the only young celeb battling break-outs – Justin Beiber and Julianne Hough have also revealed their complexions weren’t always flawless. “I’m definitely someone who suffers from acne. I’m a teenage boy,” adds the Biebs, 17, who is also a fan of Proactiv.

“The summer heat and humidity causes oil glands to kick into “overdrive” which often means more acne. Using products during the summer that are lightweight compared to the more moisturizing ones that a winter-time complexion often need is a good idea,” advises Dr. Rodan.

Sephora PRO Beauty Expert, Helen Phillips says young adults need to wear sunscreen. Statistics reveal one in five Americans will get skin cancer at some point in their life, so, be sun savvy now. “I notice that people who are oily or acne prone tend to hate sunscreen because they think it is oily or clogs their pores,” points out Helen. It isn’t true and Helen recommends lightweight products like, Clarins UV Plus Day with SPF 40 or Dermadoctor Ain’t Misbehavin’ Skin Clarifying & Mattifying Sunscreen SPF 30.

It’s important to remember to have sun sense whether you’re young or old. As young adults mature their product needs may change. Helen adds. “…the more anti-aging the product is the more it can lead to sensitivity i.e. retinols and glycolic acid.” To protect against skin being too sun sensitive, try alternatives, like the algae-based Algenist line. Algenist doesn’t cause redness or sensitivity and usually people see a difference in their skin within 10 days as opposed to 4 weeks,” states Helen.
