Healthy Hollywood: Wellness Wednesday – Perk Up Winter Weary Skin!

Winter is just downright cruel to a gal’s skin!

The snow, the wind, and the freezing temps all do a number on us – making it nearly impossible to get that fresh faced glow of stars like Anne Hathaway or Kerry Washington.

Rule #1: Switch up your skincare! Just like you wouldn’t dare wear your Summer attire in February – never use the same cleansing routine for all seasons. “Hands down, the most common Winter skin issue is dehydration,” states Dr. Milind Ambe, creator of Ambe Private Client Formula Skin Care. “With less ambient moisture the skin quickly becomes dehydrated. Dehydrated skin looks dull and shows more fine lines and wrinkles, causing skin to look older and more weathered during the winter months,” adds Dr. Ambe. To help bring back the glow, Dr. Ambe suggests skipping the hot showers and harsh bar soaps, instead opt for a mild liquid soap. A favorite wintertime product is his Ambe skin serum, Vitamin Veil, which is full of antioxidants to prevent moisture loss (www.ambe.net).

Rule #2: Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! NYC cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Howard Sobel, suggests oil-based moisturizers, which will help create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture. Avocado is another key ingredient to look for in your moisturizer.Product suggestion: GoClear Moisturizing Sunscreen (www.sephora.com). An insider secret: Sobel suggests not washing in your face in the morning, instead refresh skin with a cleansing cloth infused with moisturizing ingredients. Product suggestion: Sephora Express Cleansing Wipes (www.sephora.com).

Rule #3: Take care of your pucker! “Lips do not produce natural oils to protect them against Winter’s low humidity and chilling winds,” states Dr. Sobel. He adds, “chapped lips can become so severe that they begin to interfere with dental hygiene, talking, even kissing.” The best remedy is exfoliation. Try rubbing lips with either a soft toothbrush or lip product with gentle exfoliators.
