‘Heroes Reborn’: Levi & Shekoni On The Trouble Between Luke & Joanne

Being Evo (an evolved person) in the world of “Heroes Reborn” is a dangerous predicament to be in, especially with The Collins’ doing their best to stalk and kill them.

In the series premiere on Thursday night, we met Luke (Zachary Levi) and Joanne Collins (Judith Shekoni), a dangerous couple who have made it their mission to seek revenge on Evos for the death of their son Dennis in the Odessa, Texas, terrorist attack (Mohinder Suresh took responsibility, for an as-yet unexplained reason, turning many against evolved humans). The couple infiltrated an Evo support group meeting and killed all of them but one – Tommy (Robbie Kay), a scared teenager who left just in time (after receiving a mysterious warning text).

Although we’re just getting to know the new characters on the event series from Creator Tim Kring, it’s pretty clear from their season premiere attack that Luke and Joanne are not on the same page.

“Personally, I feel like by the time you’re meeting Luke, he’s pretty much out of steam when it comes to wanting to kill people. He really did believe that if they did this just long enough, he’d get his wife back and she would be able to get through [her grief over the loss of their son], and it’s dawning on him really heavily, like right in that moment they kill all of those people in the basement. … I think he immediately is like, ‘Why did we go after this kid?'” Zachary Levi told AccessHollywood.com at a luncheon with reporters, when asked about Luke’s feelings after he saw Tommy narrowly escape the first time.

When the couple sat in what was left of Primatech’s (now Renautus’) observation room later, where Tommy teleported them after he narrowly escaped their clutches on their second encounter, Luke expressed his second thoughts to his wife on their killing-all-Evos revenge mission, telling her they went after the wrong people. And it sounds like those feelings will continue to gnaw at him as the series continues.

“I wonder if, in some ways, Luke looks at it like, ‘Thank God we got stuck out here,’ and now, let’s use this as a moment of, ‘Ooh, what? We lived through that. Let’s go back home, let’s get back on track.’ That’s what I think Luke is feeling,” Zachary said.

Judith said the couple’s encounter with the teen – and how ready Joanne was to shoot him (and Tommy’s ice cream shop crush, Emily) — shows how far into her anger Joanne has gone.

“I actually think the thing with Tommy is one of the divisions in [their] marriage… [Luke] probably thought I would never do that to a young boy — to a child — and that I have no remorse and no conscious about that, because if we’re doing this because of a child and I’m still going to do it to other children, then it does start bear a question of ‘What are my intentions?'” the actress said. “And so I think it’s good, because it shows where my character is at particularly.”

“And that’s definitely one of the things I think Luke has been struggling with is he went on this journey trying to save his wife, and now he’s not even sure if she’s in there anymore,” Zachary added.
