Homeland Stars Talk Season 3

“Homeland” Season 2 ended with a major cliffhanger with Brody on the run and Carrie concealing her involvement in his escape – so where can the show possibly go when it returns later this month?

“It’s very sober in tone in the beginning of the third season,” Claire Danes, who plays CIA officer Carrie Mathison, told Access Hollywood at the Season 3 premiere in Washington, D.C., on Monday.

”[The agency is] really are facing the consequences of having failed to anticipate that attack and the devastation obviously was profound and they’re in a time of shock still and real mournfulness,” she said of the start of the award-winning Showtime series. “They’re grieving and I think Carrie feels, she felt responsible for 9/11. [And] boy, does she feel responsible for this incident!”

The Emmy-nominated actress said even she was shocked by the events of the new season.

“We’re still in the middle of it, but I am just like gobsmacked by what these writers are capable of,” she told Access. “And… I don’t know where it’s gonna end still! That’s what’s so fun. It’s on this careening train that is off.”

Damian Lewis (also an Emmy nominee), who plays soldier-turned-terrorist Nicolas Brody, said his character’s future is very uncertain.

“You’re gonna see a guy who’s on the run. He is… the most wanted man on the globe, and I think the question is, ‘Has Brody been taken care of by the ex-filtration process and the CIA, or has he been abandoned?’” he told Access. “Those are probably two questions you can ask yourself. So where will they find him and what condition will they find him in?”

“Homeland” Season 3 debuts on Showtime on September 29 at 9 PM.
