Hugh Jackman On The Pain Of Miscarriage & How His Son Helped Him Heal

Hugh Jackman didn’t shy away from addressing a very sensitive and personal subject on his visit to Tuesday’s episode of “Katie,” addressing the subject of miscarriages with host Katie Couric.

“It’s interesting — until you go through it, you realize it’s not talked about a lot,” Hugh said, in an advance clip of Tuesday’s episode, which features the “Les Miserables” actor.

Hugh and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, are now parents to two children – Oscar, 12, and Ava, 7 – whom they adopted, and he told Katie the pair always wanted to go that route as well.

“To be clear, Deb and I always wanted to adopt. So that was always in our plan. We didn’t know where in the process that would happen, but biologically, obviously we tried and it was not happening for us and it is a difficult time,” Hugh continued. “We did IVF and Deb had a couple of miscarriages. And it was actually, I’ll never forget it — the miscarriage thing is also — apparently it happens to one in three pregnancies. But it’s very rarely talked about. It’s almost secretive, you know? So I hope Deb doesn’t mind me bringing it up now.

“But it’s a good thing to talk about it,” Hugh added. “It’s more common and it is tough. There’s a grieving that you have to go through. So the moment Oscar was born, you know, all the heartache just melted away. And… you can’t prepare for that moment. Nothing can prepare you… You can’t even explain how incredible it is and that avalanche of emotion that comes and how it opens up your heart, how it frustrates you, how it angers you, how everything is just all the sudden how alive you are as a parent.”

Asked by Katie about the buzz surrounding his film, “Les Miserables,” Hugh turned it back to the Oscar he already has – his son.

“Whenever I hear ‘Oscar,’ I think what’s my son done… He’s about to turn 13 so he’s going through that whole [phase],” he laughed.
