‘I Am Cait’ Premiere: Top Moments & Reactions

“I just hope I get it right. I hope I get it right,” Caitlyn Jenner says in the opening moments of her eight-part docuseries “I Am Cait.”

As fans discovered during the show’s premiere episode on Sunday, “get it right” she does, but Caitlyn recognizes her journey has just begun.

“I am Cait” chronicles the former Olympian and current reality star’s highly publicized gender transition, and packed a wallop of emotional heft and even self-deprecating humor in its first hour. As cameras follow Caitlyn into her Malibu home, watching her toss out old clothes, embrace a glam squad and even joke about her newest athletic endeavors (“Bruce was a much better tennis player,” Caitlyn laughs during a friendly match) will seem like familiar territory at first.

Viewers used to seeing Caitlyn alongside her famous children and stepchildren on smash series like “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” will be pleased to see “I Am Cait” adopt a similar pace and structure as its E! counterparts. What may surprise some is the cutting social commentary and poignant family drama that also ensues.

Here are a few of the most noteworthy actions and reactions in “I Am Cait” premiere:

Esther Jenner Embraces Caitlyn

Caitlyn’s mother has become an overnight celebrity in her own right, with her honest and straightforward approach to her daughter’s intense journey. Esther’s willingness to educate herself on the transgendered community and really listen to Caitlyn serves as one of the show’s core examples of compassion and understanding.

“I think he’s a very good-looking woman. He’s still Bruce,” Esther smiles near the beginning of the episode, but after getting to know Caitlyn a bit more she utters this heart-tugging statement that illustrates just how far she’s come:

“I loved him with all of my heart, and I certainly love her with all of my heart,” she says.

Pass the tissues.

Caitlyn’s Healthy Sense of Humor

The former Olympian appears to be having a blast at her own expense during some of the episode’s lighter moments, like when raiding her wardrobe and bemoaning her old taste in clothes.

“I hate to say it, but what in the hell was Bruce thinking?” Caitlyn laughs at first, but the joke takes on new life in a later scene when she shows off a Tom Ford dress and the family’s style queen Kim Kardashian lets her know Kris Jenner — Caitlyn’s ex-wife — has one just like it in a different color.

Kanye West’s Surprising Support

Caitlyn admits she’s “never been close” with her former step-daughter’s husband, but said she’s “always loved his open-mindedness,” and explains that Kanye was the driving force to help Kim welcome her former step-father’s new identity with open arms.

“I think this is one of the strongest things that has happened in our existence as human beings that are so controlled by perception,” Kanye congratulates Caitlyn during a visit with Kim. “You couldn’t have been up against more.”

Kylie Jenner Meets Caitlyn

Kylie sees her father post-transition for the first time in a funny FaceTime conversation, in which she admits she’s “loopy” after a dentist appointment. But when she later accepts a hug from an overjoyed Caitlyn (“Hey, pretty!” Caitlyn greets her youngest daughter), the two bond instantly over the process of getting hair extensions and looking through old family photographs. When Caitlyn jokes, “Isn’t this a lot more fun than sitting around talking about sports?” Kylie’s initial worries seem to have already dissipated.

“I think it’ll be a little uncomfortable in the beginning,” she says prior to her visit, “But I think we’re both ready.”

And she was right.

Caitlyn Becomes An Advocate

The episode’s most stirring storyline involves Caitlyn’s acknowledgment of the alarming murder and suicide rates among the transgendered community. She travels to San Diego to meet the family and friends of Kyler Prescott, a transgendered teen who had committed suicide, and wraps her arms around the group in solidarity.

“We’re all beautiful,” she says, as balloons are released in Kyler’s honor.

“Seek help,” Caitlyn advises at the close of the episode. “You just have to get through the day.”
