‘Idol’ Recap: Top 10 Females Take The Stage

After several stellar performances from the guys on Tuesday, including the very-stirring number from David Archuleta, the ten female finalists took the “American Idol” stage and faced some very tough remarks from the judges on Wednesday.

Syesha Mercado took on the standard “Me and Mrs. Jones,” adding an original flare by changing the gender-specific lyrics, but found little in the form of praise from the judges.

“You fall off pitch a little bit when you fall into the soft notes,” Paula Abdul claimed.

“I thought it was a bit indulgent,” Simon Cowell stated. “The song obviously wasn’t written for a girl so it was probably a silly thing to have done there.”

Unfortunately for the gals, Syesha wasn’t alone when it came to some knocks from the judges.

Ramiele Malubay also took a hit for her version of “Don’t Leave Me This Way.”

“I thought you were much, much better last week. This is one of those performances I am not going to remember,” Simon said.

Resident female rocker Amanda Overmyer also took a hit, not just for her song choice, “Carry On My Wayward Son,” but for her look.

“Everything felt contrived from what you wear to this terrible hair,” Simon said of her Cruella DeVille-styled coif.

But there were a few high notes from the ladies on Wednesday, as a few of the contestants managed to impress the panel

Irish lass Carly Smithson, who performed her favorite song, “Crazy On You,” by Heart, earned some well-deserved praise from the judges.

“It takes a fine singer, to sing those big notes,” Paula said. “You are an amazing singer and you did an amazing job.”

Brooke White, who some have said is reminiscent of legendary songstress Carly Simon, connected with the judges by taking on Carly’s classic “You’re So Vain.”

“Brooke, I absolutely loved it,” Simon enthused. “It was the absolute perfect song for you. It was one of the rare occasions where I felt the artist had genuinely chosen the song. It absolutely connected.”

On Thursday, America will find out which four finalists (two guys and two gals) will be sent packing.

And Brooke certainly isn’t the only contestant who conjures up images of other celebrities. CLICK HERE to check out our gallery of “American Idol” celebrity knock-offs!
