‘Idol’ Recap: Which Finalists Will Be ‘Stayin’ Alive?’

Either the performances on “American Idol” were not that good or the judges were especially cranky.

The four contestants left sang Bee Gees songs with the guidance of Barry
Gibb. The songs the group made famous in the 1970’s and 80’s didn’t seem to hold up as well when the Idol contestants tried to do them.

Part of the problem was that the women all have singing voices that range lower than the Brothers Gibb ever did on a good day.

Simon Cowell told Melinda Doolittle her rendition of “Love You Inside Out” was “more of a backing vocalist performance.” However, he said the second half of her version of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” was good enough to push her into the semifinals.

The judges hated Blake Lewis. Randy Jackson called his performance of “You Should Be Dancing” “very corny.” Jackson reminded Lewis after he sang “This Is Where I Came In” that he didn’t have to beat-box on every song. Cowell also predicts Blake’s “Idol” future is on the line.

After LaKisha Jones sang “Stayin’ Alive,” Cowell told her, “No kiss tonight, baby.” He said she could be in trouble when the viewers’ votes are counted. Even when Paula Abdul offered the encouraging news that many in the audience were on their feet, Simon suggested that the reason they were was that they were “heading for the exits.”

Jones also went hoarse towards the end of “Run To Me,” but Abdul told her not to beat herself up over that.

The standout of the night was Jordin Sparks and “To Love Somebody.” Jackson told her she was winning after that performance. The judges were not so kind after she sang “Woman In Love” — Cowell said she looked and
sounded “old-fashioned and very pageanty.”

After tonight, there will be just three would-be Idols left.
