Jada Pinkett Smith On Showing Off Her Dark Side On ‘Gotham’ & Jaden Smith’s Cameo Request

Jada Pinkett Smith gets to be bad this fall as underworld character Fish Mooney in Fox’s “Gotham,” a Batman origins story.

“She’s the owner of a club right now and she wants to take over Gotham, basically, so we’ll see how that plays out,” Jada told Access Hollywood on Sunday at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour. “Fish is, she’s a very edgy woman with quite a temper, but I did kind of a mix of Griselda Blanco with Norma Desmond, Griselda Blanco being like one of the most notorious female gangsters… And then Norma Desmond from ‘Sunset Blvd.,’ so I did a mashup between the two.”

The actress plays a “Gotham” character who can be either kind or cutthroat, given the situation, and Jada said she loves the scary sides of Fish alongside her minion, Robin Lord Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot (who becomes The Penguin).

“It gives you an opportunity to kind of explore that more shadow side of your personality that we’re not really allowed to do on a daily basis, so having these two characters to be like pretty bad ass, is fun,” she said.

Robin, an alum of “The Walking Dead” (he was one-half of the hippie couple Carol and Rick met in the most recent season), is already getting compliments for his performance of the early version of the famed comic villain.

“It’s the only time when people tell me that I creep them out where I’m like, ‘Thank you so much. That’s so nice of you,'” Robin said as he spoke with Access, alongside his co-star on Sunday.

“I told him, what did I tell you straight up? I said, ‘You’re going to be a stand out in this one,;” Jada chimed in, referring to Robin’s performance. “I told him that straight up. His work is just really on point.”

Although the show doesn’t premiere on Fox until September 22, being part of a Batman origins story has resulted in a cameo request from Jada’s son, Jaden, who earlier this summer famously attended Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s nuptials in the a white-colored caped crusader suit.

“I tell you what, it’s so funny because he did ask to make an appearance on the show in the white Batman suit,” Jada told Access. “I don’t think it’s going to happen, but he did ask.”

There already is an early Batman-in-the-making on “Gotham,” in the form of a 12-year-old Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), but could Jaden do something else on the series?

“Who knows,” Jada said. “I mean, my kids are off doing their thing. They have their worlds. But he definitely wants to come on the show. He has been twisting my arm about that, but you know, I feel like at this particular point in time, everybody needs to go and do their thing.”
