Jenna Coleman Announces ‘Doctor Who’ Exit

In sad, but not unexpected news, Jenna Coleman is leaving BBC America’s “Doctor Who.”

“I have left the Tardis,” Jenna told BBC Radio One host Nick Grimshaw on Friday.

Jenna, who plays companion Clara Oswald to Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, has already shot her last episode too.

“It’s happened,” she said. “I’ve filmed my last scenes.”

Saying goodbye to the show she joined in 2012, first paired opposite Matt Smith’s Doctor, was – understandably — a bit of tearful occasion for the actress.

“I did get emotional,” she told the radio DJ. “You can’t help it. … It’s been my life really for the last three, four years. And I just love Peter so much, and the job so much, and all the crew. It becomes really tight knit. And also, you know, like the Tardis is like your home and it’s all magical and such incredible storytelling. So yeah, I did. I shed a tear.”

Jenna said she and “Doctor Who” boss Steven Moffatt have been plotting her exit for a while.

“It’s been in the works for a very long time. Steven and I sat down a long time ago – a year ago, a year and a half ago — and tried to work out the best place to do it and the best place in which to tell a really good story, so hopefully that’s what we’ve done,” Jenna said. “I think it’s really, really cool. Obviously, we’re not going to give away any details, but it will happen at some point this season.”

The new season of “Doctor Who” begins on Saturday with an episode titled “The Magician’s Apprentice,” kicking off at 9 PM ET/PT on BBC America.
