Jimmy Fallon will soon take “The Tonight Show” reins from Jay Leno, and fellow late night host Jimmy Kimmel knows that means he’s set to face stiff competition.
“I’d rather it was somebody terrible to be honest with you,” Kimmel told Access Hollywood’s Michelle Beadle with a laugh, when asked how he feels about going head-to-head with Fallon next year, at the TIME 100 Gala in New York City on Tuesday.
But the battle is all in good fun.
“[The competition] is very friendly. We are very friendly,” he said.
In addition to his late night duties, Kimmel recently acted as the officiant for (faux) nemesis Matt Damon’s wedding vow renewal.
The news spawned buzz suggesting the funnyman may also officiate Jennifer Aniston’s upcoming marriage to Justin Theroux – an idea Kimmel quickly shot down.
“I don’t think it is becoming a trend,” he said, when asked if by Michelle if he has officially become “the celebrity wedding guy.” “It’s not like I’m running a small business.”
Michelle also caught up with Fallon, who arrived at the gala after Kimmel – a move the “Saturday Night Live” alumnus said he planned due to his larger fame.
“I made [Kimmel] come through earlier,” Fallon joked. “I’m the bigger star and I go, ‘You go in, get it out of the way and then the real Jimmy can come in at the end.’
“He fought back at first and then he got seated and that’s why he’s already been here,” he added with a laugh.
