Kathy Griffin: Joan Rivers & I Sent Mel Gibson A ‘Thank You’ Muffin Basket

It isn’t just the tabloids that are having a field day with the Mel Gibson recorded rants. Kathy Griffin told Access Hollywood she too is tackling them.

“I — as a comedian — am loving Mel Gibson’s rants,” Kathy told Access on the red carpet at VH1’s Do Something! Awards in Hollywood on Monday night. “You should know that Joan Rivers and I have chipped in together and sent him a ‘Thank You’ muffin basket… Because as a comedian, as I’m wearing gold (points to her dress), he has given us comedy gold.”

The “My Life on the D-List” star and all around funny lady said she hasn’t received a reply from Mel, but revealed she plans to change her religion so he never has an interest in her.

“Well, I’m actually going to convert to Judaism so I do not have to date Mel Gibson,” Kathy said, making a reference to the actor’s first publicized rant following his arrest on a DUI charge in 2006 – one which was peppered with anti-Semitic comments. “I want to make sure that he and I would never date.”

Kathy also had words regarding Lindsay Lohan – or at least the SCRAM bracelet that was removed as the actress headed to jail on Tuesday to serve a 90-day sentence for violating her DUI probation.

“If Lindsay’s SCRAM bracelet is available I could borrow it and let me tell you something about my mother, Maggie Griffin. She enjoys a box of wine. So, I think she could get her own SCRAM bracelet pretty darn quickly,” Kathy said.

However, the redheaded star may not want to wear a SCRAM for too long as it may clash with the outfit she is working on for the Emmy Awards where she is nominated for Outstanding Reality Program for “My Life on the D-List,” for which she has won Emmys in 2007 and 2008.

“Here’s the deal: I don’t let a heterosexual near me when it come to an award show. So, I have Robert Verdi… the bald guy with the sunglasses [on his head]. He decides everything, from the jewelry to the shoes to the dress,” Kathy explained of how she’s going about finding the right Emmy look. “He’s hitting all the sample sales because I’m on the D-list and so, of course, I don’t get loaners… He’ll put me in an A-list outfit, but believe me, it will be from last season and I will have paid for it.

“But I want to win,” Kathy continued. “I want to win the Emmy so darn much. I wish the Emmys were based on who wanted to win the most because then I would sweep.”

Kathy said she is looking forward to the show, and thinks Jimmy Fallon will do an excellent job hosting the ceremony.

“Jimmy is going to be a great host because he’s a really sweet guy. On his show [‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’], he did those skits with Jake Gyllenhaal,” she said, referring to musical numbers like “Hedgehog Doing Karate” (Click HERE to watch that skit). “He’s the type of guy that you don’t really know what to expect and that’s what I love in an award show.”
