Katie Cassidy ‘So Excited’ To Play Laurel Lance In The CW’s Arrow

Katie Cassidy is heading back to The CW this fall in “Arrow,” the new television series based on the Green Arrow comic book legend.

“When I read the script I was so excited,” the actress, a veteran of “Gossip Girl” and “Melrose Place,” told AccessHollywood.com at Comic-Con 2012 in San Diego.

Katie – who sports a brunette hue instead of her usual blond locks in the show – said she waited for one piece to fall into place – Stephen Amell being chosen for the title role of Arrow/Oliver Queen, before signing on.

“They hadn’t cast the Arrow yet and I waited until they had done that, but reading the script, I pictured Stephen before I even knew who Stephen was. Once he got cast, it was a perfect fit,” she said of her co-star. “I’m extremely lucky and I’m so happy. We have a wonderful team and a wonderful cast and I think it’s gonna be great.”

Katie plays Laurel Lance in the show, and in the season premiere, her character is carrying a lot of baggage.

“She’s a pro-bono lawyer, she grew up with Oliver and the two of them had a very close friendship, which turned into a relationship and he is the love of her life. He’s also this bad boy and he ends up basically betraying me and disappearing for five years… We all think he’s dead,” she explained of the set up. “Losing someone extremely close to you, I think Laurel’s sort of stuck her head in her work… She’s very driven, she has a heart of gold, and she’s smart.

“Then, Oliver shows up one day and it’s totally confusing and overwhelming,” Katie continued of the pilot plot. “There’s a lot of anger… and we’ll see what happens.”

As fans of the comics know, Laurel herself – SPOILER – also becomes a superhero – Black Canary, but it doesn’t appear that’s on the cards for Katie’s character right away.

“I’ve heard a few things, but you never know,” she said. “Stay tuned. We’ll see.”

And Katie would welcome donning a superhero costume if it came to pass.

“That would be awesome. Doing an action film or TV has always been something I wanted to get involved with and this is a really good opportunity and we’ll see if it happens,” she said.

“Arrow” premieres Wednesday, October 10 at 8/7c on The CW.
