She’s “hot,” then she’s “cold.” Katy Perry may sport latex dresses and bikinis made of whipped cream, but it’s no secret this “California Gurl” got her start singing in a church founded by her minister parents.
“I sang ‘Oh Happy Day’ starting at 9,” Katy told David Letterman on “Late Show” Tuesday night. “‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow’ too.”
The “I Kissed A Girl” singer said that despite her departure from her conservative roots, she is still close with her Evangelical Christian parents.
“There’s a dynamic between children and their parents that sometimes you can agree to disagree, and we definitely do that, ” she said. “I discovered bands like Queen, and the Beach Boys, and of course The Beatles, and I just found out that the world maybe wasn’t so flat.”
The late night host confronted Katy with her nearly-naked Rolling Stone spread, asking, “What does God think of that?”
“That’s side boob,” she laughed.
“When your folks see that, they must understand it’s show business,” David continued.
“Uh, I don’t know if it’s the ‘understanding’ that they do,” Katy said. “I think there’s some grunts and moans and a couple of ‘Oy veys.’”
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, the blue-eyed beauty is engaged to “Get Him To The Greek” star Russell Brand. The couple met at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, and Russell proposed to Katy in January during a trip to India.
Although the British actor-comedian has battled drug and alcohol abuse in the past, Katy said her parents “loved” Russell when they met him.
“[Russell] is very charismatic, and my father is very charismatic,” she explained. “So they got along very well.”
When pressed about the date of the wedding, Katy coyly said, “I’m not telling you…”
“I guess that means I’m not being invited,” David replied. “Cancel my trip to IKEA!”
Katy’s new album “Teenage Dream” hit stores earlier this week.
