LONDON (July 14, 2006)– Kylie Minogue talks about her breast cancer treatment — and offers a message of hope to other cancer patients — in an upcoming TV interview.
The 38-year-old Australian pop star was close to tears during much of the interview, set to air Sunday on Sky One.
“I love to say: ‘You can get through it,”’ she said. “You can.”
Minogue had completed dates on her “Showgirl” tour in Europe and was heading to Australia for homecoming concerts when she was diagnosed with cancer in May 2005. She underwent surgery to remove a lump from her breast and had chemotherapy.
British media have reported she is now in remission.
The moment she learned she had cancer “is still sinking in,” the singer said. “It’s very steep learning curve.”
Minogue said she was troubled with how the news would affect her parents, who were upset when she decided to undergo chemotherapy in Paris to be near her boyfriend, actor Olivier Martinez.
“The family’s totally … it’s like a bomb has dropped,” she said.
Minogue said she had one day’s grace “where I knew and went for a walk down the beach with my brother and my boyfriend.”
“The next day we made the announcement, and then I was virtually a prisoner in the house which, not that I intended to go anywhere, but from then on I was just completely thrown into another world.”
She is scheduled to perform a series of concerts in Australia later this year.
