Lady Gaga: Amy Winehouse Taught Me I Could Make It

Lady Gaga is one of the many celebrities still in mourning following the death of Amy Winehouse on Saturday at the age of 27.

The “Born This Way” singing superstar said Amy was one of the stars who greatly inspired her as she was coming up through the ranks.

“I was with Lady Starlight… in Duane Reed in New York City, we were shopping for eyelashes and glue… so I just remembered I saw her on the cover of Rolling Stone and it was her first cover,” the singer recounted during an interview on Omaha, Nebraska’s 94.1 FM on Tuesday.

Gaga said Amy’s uniqueness helped her continue her own journey.

“I always felt kind of like an outsider — in pop music, and just from high school and I remember [Lady Starlight] looked over at me and said, ‘If she can do it, you can do it,’” the pop star recalled. “So I always felt like Amy had opened a door for girls like me who didn’t fit that exact real pop mold and [who were] real wholesome.

“She was really special,” Gaga added. “And she’s gonna be greatly missed.”

The superstar said she never actually met Amy, but she remains heartbroken over the loss.

“No, I never got to meet her. I think sometimes we were in the same place, but gosh, I’m real devastated about it,” she said.
