Liam Hemsworth Talks Newfound Paparazzi Attention, Bonding With Miley Cyrus On ‘Last Song’ Set

Miley Cyrus may be a household name, but the level of her popularity was news to her “The Last Song” co-star — and current boyfriend — Australian actor Liam Hemsworth.

“I knew who she was but not to the extent of who she is and how big she was,” Liam told AccessHollywood.com‘s Laura Saltman at the film’s junket in Beverly Hills on Saturday. “I worked that out in the first day of shooting. I came down and there [were] 100 fans and 10 photographers on either end of the beach.”

On that day, the pair filmed their first kiss — a moment captured by the paparazzi. And Liam said that having the added attention on him has taken some getting used to.

“My life’s a lot different right now,” the former Aussie soap star said. “[It’s] such an odd thing for photographers to be following you around and taking photos of you while you eat and walk and shower.”

Miley confirmed the longstanding rumors — that she and Liam are an item — during a post-Oscars interview with E!‘s Marc Malkin last Sunday when she called him her “boyfriend.” And on Saturday, Liam told Laura how the two first grew close.

“We spent a lot of time together. We’re shooting together every day and together on weekends and we were kind of each others only friends down there,” he said of filming “The Last Song.” “We just got really close… We enjoyed being around each other.”

While Liam may not seem to have any competition for Miley’s affections, the actor did open up about another rivalry — one for a certain super-role.

“I got flown over [to LA] to do a screen test for ‘Thor’ which my older brother [Chris] ended up getting,” Liam said.

“We had a fight, a big one,” he laughed. “No, I’m happy for him to get something. As long as a Hemsworth is throwing that hammer around, then we’re good.”

“The Last Song” arrives in theaters on March 31.
