Linkin Park Slays The Competition On The Billboard Chart

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (May 24, 2007) — Linkin Park takes the Billboard 200 chart by storm with their latest release, “Minutes to Midnight.” The alt rockers’ new album debuted with a whopping 622,827 copies sold, granting it the highest first-week total of the year. As Linkin Park lead guitarist Brad Delson told AccessHollywood.com, the huge tally for “Minutes to Midnight” was a bit of a surprise in a year that has seen sluggish album sales.“We heard that the biggest record of the year was Norah Jones,” said Delson. “Her first week she did like 418,000 records, which in this environment is huge. So to have eclipsed that, like by a significant margin, it was shocking to us. We never expected that and it’s just a tremendous, tremendous feeling.” It’s been four years since the band’s last release, and it was a relief to Delson that they received such a big reception after being away for a while.“We haven’t put out a record in a long time, and in a lot of cases artists’ fans might lose attention or anticipation. In our case, miraculously, it seemed to have been the opposite — because we were away and because of the anticipation about the album we were working on, it seems like interest in the band has never been higher.”Delson revealed that the band is hard at work readying for a month-long stint in Europe headlining shows and festivals, and then they’ll return to the U.S. for the Projekt Revolution tour with My Chemical Romance, Placebo, and others.R&B singer Tank debuts at # 2 this week with his third album, “Sex Love & Pain,” selling 103,065 copies — a sales best for his career so far.Michael Buble falls from the top of the chart to the third position this week with his latest, “Call Me Irresponsible.”Wilco earns its biggest charting and sales week yet, as “Sky Blue Sky” debuts at # 4 with 87,342 copies sold. Country star Gretchen Wilson also debuts with her brand new album, “One Of The Boys,” at # 5, and Megadeth offers the final Top 10 debut album this week with “United Abominations” at # 8.Maroon 5 returns to the top of the Hot Downloaded Singles chart with “Makes Me Wonder,” after being temporarily dethroned last week by T-Pain’s “Buy U A Drank (Shawty Snappin’).” T-Pain lands at # 2 this week.

With Maroon 5’s album “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” in stores this week, it’s a good bet that they’ll appear on the Top 10 next week, though whether they’ll maintain this week’s spike in album sales remains to be seen.
