Luther Vandross’ Mother Dies

Mary Ida Vandross, mother of R&B legend Luther Vandross, died last week of natural causes, Access Hollywood has learned.

She was 82.

Mary Ida outlived all four of her children, as well as her only grandchild.

No additional information was immediately available.

Luther Vandross died from a stroke in 2005 at the age of 54.

Following her son’s death, Mary Ida spoke to Access Hollywood about losing Luther.

“I miss him tremendously as he was the last of my four children to pass away,” she told Access Hollywood. “You knew him as such a big, strong person and to see him brought down from diabetes to a weakling — it’s almost unbearable.”
