‘Mad Men’s’ Rich Sommer Talks Season 4 & Preparing For Baby No. 2

Emmy nominated drama “Mad Men” returns to television screens tonight for the premiere of Season 4 and rather than celebrate with a big bash, Rich Sommer, who plays TV department head Harry Crane, will be watching it from home.

The actor has a good reason to stay inside his abode – his wife, Virginia, is pregnant with the couple’s second child.

“We have a little girl who’s about two and a half, and she’s gonna [get] a baby brother,” Rich told Access Hollywood at the show’s premiere party in Hollywood earlier this week. “We’ve very excited.”

The spectacled star revealed that he and wife Virginia’s impending arrival is due by the “end of summer, so… really soon.”

Currently filming episode 10 of the series, Rich said that his little boy just might come before they’ve finished shooting the new season.

“I asked for a couple of certain days off with fingers crossed,” Rich said of his attempt to plan his work schedule around the little one’s due date. “But you know, it’s kind of the nature of the job.

“I’m hopeful that I can be there for the blessed event and we’ll see how long I get to spend there before I race back and put a tie and a shirt on,” he laughed.

Before baby though, there is tonight’s “Mad Men” return and Rich revealed that after the dramatic Season 3 finale – which saw much of Sterling Cooper quit to form their own advertising agency — things are in a very new place.

“Obviously there’s been a big paradigm shift and everybody took a big jump together,” he explained of how audiences will find things. “We’re kind of finding out where all those guys ended up and seeing how they deal with their new positions.”

Thanks to the speed and secrecy with which Don Draper and Co. cut ties with their old firm – run by the Brits — not everyone is around. Harry, however, is one of the younger crew back on board with the core ad men gang.

“I have high hopes for Harry Crane, I’m rooting for him all the time,” Rich said. “I think he’s a guy that isn’t always the best person for any given job, but he’s clearly ambitious and he may be more ambitious than he’s talented. Hopefully he’s sort of able to spin about those things enough to parlay it into continuing advancements.”
