Madonna hasn’t given up on her hopes of adopting Malawian toddler Mercy.
According to an e-mail from the pop star, published in Malawian newspaper The Nation on Sunday, Madonna wants to provide for orphaned young girl Chifundo “Mercy” James, despite a judge’s rejection of her adoption application.
“I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and healthcare possible,” Madonna is quoted as writing. “And it’s my hope that she, like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country.”
In 2006, Madonna adopted David Banda from the African nation. However, on April 3, her adoption of Mercy was rejected over a law requiring 18 to 24 months of residency in the country, a legality that caused controversy during her adoption of David. Madonna’s lawyer confirmed to the Associated Press that the pop star was appealling the verdict not long after the judge’s decision was handed down.
“Though I have been advised that I cannot publicly discuss the pending appeal regarding my desire to adopt Mercy, I do want to say how much I appreciate the level of support that I have received from the people of Malawi and my friends around the world,” Madonna reportedly added to The Nation.
