Matte Is Back (Glam Slam)

Even though the official start of autumn isn’t until Sunday, here in New York, we’re already jumping into our fall trends. One trend we couldn’t help but notice (and love!) is the matte look. We’re seeing matte everywhere from the runway, to the streets, to the office, and everywhere in between.

Glam Slam sat down with Jean Godfrey June, Lucky Magazine’s Executive Beauty Director, to chat about the different ways to incorporate the matte trend into your daily beauty routine.

Matte Nails:
“I think matte nails kind of got people thinking about matte again. The Butter London Matte Finish Topcoat, which instantly mattifies any color, is fantastic.” Try layering over a deep navy, such as OPI’s Russian Navy, for a sophisticated look.

Matte Eyeshadow:
“With matte, you notice the pigment so much more than you do with a shiny texture. Also, they counter the oiliness people can get on their lids as the day (or night) wears on.” We like Too Face Matte Eyeshadow Collection, because “the colors are great and the neutrals are incredibly wearable.” Try a colorful smoky eye by blending Midnight, a beautiful navy blue, into your crease and highlighting your brow bone with Fresh Linen.

Matte Foundation:
At first thought, matte foundations sound cakey and drying. But, new matte foundations, like NARS Sheer Matte Foundation “manage to be moisturizing, sheer, and matte. It’s kind of like a mission impossible, but they’ve made it happen!” Apply with a damp makeup sponge for super sheer coverage.

Matte Lips:
A lot of women get nervous with matte lips, thinking it dries them out. The best way to ease into it? The NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. According to Jean, “It is such a luxury! The colors are so rich. It really does look like velvet.” Our favorite shade at Glam Slam is Dragon Girl- a bold red adored by Blake Lively and Emily Blunt.

Matte Cheeks:
“In general, shimmer on your cheeks is a good thing, because it creates a highlight and brings structure to your face.” However, not every girl is crazy about shimmer. For matte cheeks, the trend can work “as long as the color is dimensional.” Try a cream formula like Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks, which lets you build coverage from sheer matte, to ultra-rosy.
