Michael Fassbender In Talks To Magnetize ‘X-Men: First Class’

Michael Fassbender may soon have a new title — Master of Magnetism.

The “Inglorious Basterds” star is in talks to play Magneto in “X-Men: First Class,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

James McAvoy has already been cast as Professor Charles Xavier – Magneto’s future rival. The Matthew Vaughn-directed film will follow the Marvel superhero team during their early days.

However, the trade reported another Marvel-based film, Columbia’s “Spider-Man” reboot, is eying Fassbender to play its own as-yet-unannounced villain, which could conflict with “First Class.”

A “Magneto” standalone film was previously announced, with “X-Men” franchise star Ian McKellen initially planning to reprise his title role – however, in 2009, producer Lauren Shuler Donner said the film was “at the back of the queue.”

“X-Men: First Class” is slated for a June 3, 2011 release.
