Michael J. Fox stepped out at NBC’s Upfront presentation on Monday, promoting his new comedy, “The Michael J. Fox Show,” for the same network that was behind one of his most famous TV outings — “Family Ties.”
“It’s weird. It’s like deja vu — back to the future,” he laughed with Access Hollywood on the red carpet in New York City, throwing in a reference from his lengthy resume. “But it’s really exciting, I’m really happy with the show, I’m happy with our timeslot and I’m just thrilled to be back.
“The Michael J. Fox Show” will debut this fall, airing on Thursdays at 9:30 PM, just before “Parenthood.”
In the series, Michael plays Mike, a former New York anchorman, suffering from Parkinson’s, who decides to go back to work (much to the delight of his family).
“As I move through the streets [on the show], people know me and I know them. It’s a little bit of my life reflected,” he said of the series.
“Breaking Bad’s” Betsy Brandt plays Michael’s on-screen wife, Annie, and he said their sitcom marriage is similar to his real life marriage with his former “Family Ties” co-star, Tracy Pollan.
“There’s a similar kind of relationship, I think, to what I have with Tracy. It’s real easy. Like our two characters give each other the benefit of the doubt and are kind of comfortable with each other and she’s comfortable with the stuff I’m dealing with and I’m comfortable with the fact that she has to deal with it,” Michael said. “It’s really great. It’s fun.”
The show shoots in New York, and when asked how he’ll get used to the daily grind of filming a sitcom again, Michael said, “Pilates!”
“I like Pilates. It’s great,” he said. “[I’ll] just have my coffee and wake up and go.”
