Most of the performers at the “Kids’ Inaugural: We Are The Future Concert” weren’t even old enough to vote in the 2008 election, but that didn’t’ stop Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers and a slew of kid-friendly stars from putting on an amazing show Monday night at Washington, D.C.‘s Verizon Center.
Michelle Obama thanked the crowd of 14,000 people for their service to the country, many of whom were military families, who were able to attend the concert for free.
“Barack and I are so thankful for the military sacrifice that helps make our nation safe,” she said. “We join you all today and every day in praying for your loved ones and their safety.”
The soon-to-be First Lady, who was accompanied by daughters Sasha and Malia, also delivered a message of hope and a call to action for children across the country.
“You kids are the future of this great nation. And at this extraordinary moment in our nation’s history, we wanted you to be able to join in on this celebration and share this incredible journey with us,” Michelle continued. “You don’t need to wear a uniform to serve this country… We all have something incredible to contribute to the life of this nation. And kids, this means you, too.”
Michelle asked the children in attendance to help in any area of service they could.
“We need every American to serve their community including young people. Whether that is volunteering at a homeless shelter or visiting an elderly person, whether it is picking up trash, writing letters to our troops, we can all do something special. We can all work to make this great nation one filled with hope and prosperity,” she said.
Miley, who performed her hits “Fly On The Wall” and “See You Again,” told Sasha and Malia, “Girls, I know you guys gotta be proud of your dad and so am I,” before bringing her own dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, on stage to sing “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” together.
In what appeared to be the crowd’s favorite appearance, The Jonas Brothers treated the their fans to “SOS,” “Lovebug,” “Tonight” and “Burin’ Up.” Sasha, Malia and mom Michelle were spotted dancing along to all the songs from the singing siblings.
In addition to Miley and The Jonas Brothers, the kids and their families, which also included the Bidens’ grandchildren, were entertained with appearances by Demi Lovato, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, Bow Wow, Lucy Liu, Queen Latifah and Usher.
