Miley Cyrus Talks New Music: I Don’t Know The Person Who Made Can’t Be Tamed

Miley Cyrus is evolving as an artist and she is not pleased with her older tracks.

“Right now, when people go to iTunes and listen to my old music, it’s so irritating to me because I can’t just erase that stuff and start over,” the singer told Billboard. “My last record [‘Can’t Be Tamed’] I feel so disconnected from — I was 16 or 17 when I made it.”

Now, Miley – who turned 20 in November and just released her edgy new single, “We Can’t Stop” – says she doesn’t even recognize her old self, musically speaking.

“When you’re in your 20s, you just don’t really know that person anymore,” she told the mag.

The former Disney darling released a daring new video for the Mike Will-produced track this week, in which Miley writhes around on a bed in a tight white sports bra and leggings, spanks a few people and licks the face of a doll while in a pool, among other things.

(Oh – and there’s a lot of taxidermy happening as well!)

The outspoken star said the song and video reflect where she’s at in her life.

“I didn’t make this song for the critics, but for the people living it,” she said. “I’m 20 years old and I want to talk to the people that are up all night with their friends. It’s based on a true story of a crazy night I had: When I heard the song for the first time, it captured exactly what I was living.”

Her new sound is decidedly more urban, though Miley said she’s “not coming in trying to rap.”

“It’s more like, ‘I don’t see any girls out there doing what Miguel and Frank Ocean are doing,’” she told the mag. “We’ve been calling it ‘count-step,’ because it’s like country, dubstep and a little trap.”
