Mindy McCready Taken Into Custody Over Probation Violation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 26, 2007) — Singer Mindy McCready’s life becomes increasingly more like a tale out of a sad old country song, as she faces yet more trouble with authorities.

McCready, 31, has been taken into police custody for allegedly violating probation, following her arrest on Monday on charges of battery and resisting arrest.McCready (real name Melinda Gayle McCready) was taken into custody yesterday at Nashville International Airport, according to officials. The singer, who had a # 1 hit in 1996 with “Guys Do It All the Time,” has been on probation for fraudulently obtaining the painkiller Oxycontin from a pharmacy in 2004, and also faces a pending probation violation charge resulting from a drunken driving arrest in May 2005.On Monday, she was booked on misdemeanor charges in Ft. Myers, Florida, when she allegedly scratched her mother on the face and then resisted Sheriff’s deputies’ attempts to restrain her. She was freed on $1,000 bond on Saturday.

Deputy District Attorney General Derek Smith told The Tennessean newspaper that McCready was taken into custody because she had violated probation in three ways: by being charged in a new offense; not reporting those charges immediately to her probation officer; and by the nature of the new assault charges. She was being booked for the alleged probation violation Wednesday night, according to an official at the Williamson County sheriff’s office outside Nashville. She was found not guilty of the previous DUI charge in July 2006, but was still found guilty of driving on a suspended license. She pleaded guilty to violating her probation, but has since petitioned to withdraw that plea, with a Circuit Court hearing on the charge scheduled for September 7 in Williamson County, TN.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s department, there was no bond set in this instance, and McCready will remain in custody until her scheduled court appearance on September 7.

The Williamson County Court Clerk told the Associated Press that McCready’s previous attorney, Lee Dryer, had withdrawn as her lawyer. A reason for his withdrawal was not offered, and it is not currently known whether she has a new attorney. While McCready was once known for country music success (her album “Ten Thousand Angels” sold 2 million copies in 1996), she has remained in the headlines more for her personal troubles in recent years. She has not released an album since 2002’s “Mindy McCready,” which faced low sales and led to the end of her contract with Capitol Records.
