MTV VMA Producers Gear Up For Sunday’s Big Show

Miley Cyrus takes the stage this Sunday night as host of the MTV Video Music Awards.

“She’s completely candid, she’s musical, she’s out there, she’s provocative, she’s chaotic, she doesn’t listen to anything we say, so it’s perfect,” VMAs Executive Producer Van Toffler said, with a laugh, when Access Hollywood spoke to the show’s producers earlier this week.

“It made sense from the start,” EP Garrett English added.

The VMAs will see a gathering of some of music’s biggest stars, and producers have been working with Miley to get ready for Sunday’s event.

“We don’t really set a lot of rules, but we definitely go over the format of the show and the script and talk her through all the performances,” Toffler said. “We did some pre-tapes with her. … She’s done television before, so she kind of knows the environment.”

The VMA producers are fans of music and they too are excited to see the stars hit the stage.

“All of them,” EP Jesse Ignjatovic said, when Access asked which performances the EPs are looking forward to. “Love that Bieber’s back. You know, it’s been a while. [He’s] back on our stage for his first performance [of his new single, ‘What Do You Mean’]. That’s exciting for us. I think The Weeknd is exciting. He hasn’t performed ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ yet anywhere, so for that to be a global premiere – we’re thrilled about that. I think Twenty One Pilots/A$AP Rocky collaborating together is something that we’re excited about because you won’t see that anywhere else.”

“And we’ve got a surprise opening,” Toffler said.

On Thursday, it was revealed that the surprise Toffler mentioned is a show-opening performance by Nicki Minaj.
